Gig Guide: Sun 13th Dec

Sun 13th Dec 20:00 SPARTACUS LIVE :: BOY COM :: MANDRAKES :: FIRE FOR YOUR SAFETY :: ILLUSTRATED MEN

BOY COM. (short for BOY COMMUNICATION) is a 7-piece Dub- Reggae-Hip-Hop collective, whose aim is to make you groove till the end of the night, even after you've left the venue. Its like the coolest house party you've ever been to: there's plenty of booze, beautiful people, and BOY COM. are providing your ideal soundtrack. With their new album ‘Paraphonilia’ you can expect the phatest beats, the smoothest basslines and the roaring-est brass section you've ever heard! There ain't a chance in hell you won't like them!

“There’s enough strength and versatility within their own self-coined ‘Dub-Hop’ sound to make it clear we’d better keep an eye on these guys” - The Guardian
"A glass and a half of solid fun-tertainment" - NME

Mandrakes take their name from the flower (mandrake) whose roots (which resemble human figures) are used in magic rituals. Musically, they combine rock (and a lost ‘70s soundtrack that might include The Chicago Transit Authority, Arthur Lee’s Love and Blood, Sweat and Tears) with ‘60s Stax soul and jazz. However, a T. Mandrake song is as likely to remind you of Strange Days era Doors or Young Americans era David Bowie as it is to conjure up images of a Weill/Brechtian theatre-piece performed by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band.

Mandrakes are fronted by half Thai, half American vocalist/guitarist Jay Zieseniss, who is joined by Tanya Jackson (vocals), Matt Hanson (guitar and backing vocals), Tad MacDonald (bass and backing vocals), Al MacSween (keyboards), Mark "Monty" Garfield (drums & percussion) and the ever-excellent Mandrake Horns, comprising Leigh Coffin (tenor sax), Nicki Hutchins (clarinet, alto sax, baritone sax and backing vocals) and Kate Plane (trumpet, flugelhorn & backing vocals). Intriguingly, legendary Cream lyricist/percussionist Pete Brown is a co-lyricist and backing vocalist and also secures co-production credits for the band’s debut album From East To West And All The Rest alongside another legendary figure, Eddie Kramer, famed for his work with Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin amongst countless others.

Fire For Your Safety
bring a mix of ska, reggae and rock with a full brass section. They are currently studying at Bath Spa University and have created a great following in the area.
