Sun 11th Oct 19:30 LITTLE COURAGE :: HEALTHY MINDS COLLAPSE :: IN COLOUR :: ORIGINAL DAVE
Little Courage are a 3-piece alt-rock band brought together by a love of robots, music and sugary treats. Influenced by the likes of Mineral, Biffy Clyro, The Weakerthans, Jimmy Eat World and Cave.
Healthy Minds Collapse, comprising Andy, his brother Colin on drums and bassist Gus Schroder, have been leaving their stain all over Scotland since 2007 with their poppy, passive-aggressive take on the angst and rancour of early-90’s grunge, and it’s the sort of stain that not even Barry Scott and a biblical flood of Cillit Bang could shift. The Fife trio’s combination of guttural punk-rock gnarl with radio-ready melodies that dig into your temporal lobe like ticks has made them one of Scotland’s most-talked-about new bands,
Nirvana, of course, were another band who were able to combine melodic pop nous with abrasive, ear-blistering guitars, but as Andy puts it, “There seem to be a lot of ‘sheep’ bands around at the moment, bands who are like, ‘That’s what’s happening, that’s what we’re gonna do.’ And that disillusions me. I’m looking for something or someone to spark my interest…”
Of their influences, other than the Seattle grunge scene, the band agree on PJ Harvey, The Pixies, The Cure, Future Of The Left, Fugazi - and, perhaps most unlikely of all, Fleetwood Mac.
With a new set of songs, Healthy Minds Collapse had every reason to be optimistic about their future, and things were slowly starting to move in the right direction, but what happened next was not-even-in-your-wildest-dreams sort of stuff, when a series of fortuitous events saw none other than Elton John happen upon a demo of ‘Radio Wave’ and decide that he loved it.
‘We were in the studio that day, and we got a phone call asking if we fancied playing a gig that Sunday. We weren’t really up for it, but then they mentioned that it was supporting Elton John at McDiarmid Park...”
It’s been a long, strange trip for Healthy Minds Collapse, one they look back on with a typically working class mixture of irreverence and bemusement. But with an album tentatively scheduled for 2010 and their first full UK headline tour planned for the autumn.
Combining the energy of modern rock with the melody of classic pop, In Colour take a step away from the saturated greys of their surroundings and bring uplifting sentiment back to UK rock. The bands' style fuses together a spectrum of influences new and old, delivering a refreshing blend of power pop. The debut EP is set to hit stores and airwaves across the UK in late September backed by a string of UK dates and heavy online promotion.

Sun 11th Oct 20:00 SPARTACUS LIVE :: FIGHTING FICTION :: SKETCHES :: SPECTRUM 7 :: TOM PEAY
Fighting Fiction's debut EP "A lesser of two evils" is a powerful collision of indie rock guitar riffs, reggae tinged punk and socially aware lyrics. These are songs written with anger and sung with passion. The Bristol based four-piece evoke an honest and fundamentally English sound that is reminiscent of the brooding reggae guitar hooks of 'London Calling' era Clash, the lyrical wordplay and vocal delivery of Billy Bragg, and more recently, the acoustic guitar based sing-along sensibilities of Frank Turner and the King Blues.
Recorded with Producer Mark Williams (Bloc Party, Biffy Clyro, Million Dead, Oceansize) A buoyant energy shines through the recording. The un-apologetic sheer youthfulness of gang vocal infused choruses and hook lines show the listener these songs are made to be sung back at them.
The debut EP 'A lesser of two evils' is available on Itunes on the 16th of November 2009.
Over the past eighteen months Sketches have been touring extensively in the UK, increasing their fanbase whilst developing commercial recognition including local and national radio support from the likes of BBC6 and XFM London. The band have played at Austria's 'Snowbombing Festival', reached the finals of a competition with the opportunity to play at both Leeds and Reading festival, and were awarded a support slot with The Datsuns at the Camden Barfly by making the top ten in the nationwide 'Red Stripe Awards'. The debut single Slow Start‚ is produced by former Shed Seven member Fraser Smith who has produced music by many successful bands such as Winterkids and Little Man Tate.
Spectrum 7 have been writing unconventional, innovative and, above all, new rock songs together since 2008. They mix unconventional musical structures with electronic beats and huge riffs and with this the group have become a writing force to reckon with - with genre defying live shows that have to be seen. In their time together the surrey quintet have written a wealthy back catalogue of material, played well over a hundred shows and shared stages with the likes of Enter Shikari, Cage the Elephant, People in Planes, Frank Turner, X-Certs, Help She Can't Swim, Meet Me In St. Louis and embarked on a full national tour with :( (colonopenbracket). 2008 saw them release their debut EP 'Fade to Black and Back again', an internet release which received positive reviews from the likes of Kerrang and Rock Sound, as well as a multitude of well-established, credible publications and webzines. Every release that they've made, from EP's to demo's has turned heads... Something proved with the fact that the band have just recently signed to Xtra Mile recordings. The first single on the label 'Blue Wray' has received nothing but praise from a wide selection of media and with the debut 7 track mini-album out on later on this year alongside a nationwide tour, 2009 proves to be bigger and better in every way.
The night will start with the intricacy and delicacy of Tom Peay’s songwriting shows wisdom beyond his years and he performs with a passionate, uncompromising delivery, drawing influences from singer songwriters such as Paul Simon, Sting and John Mayer.
