Gig Guide: Sun 31st May
Sun 31st May 20:00 SERGEANT :: THE EQUIVALENT OF... :: YOUNG GUNS :: THE INSIGHT
Sergeant
Heralding from Glenrothes, Scotland, Sergeant’s sound is very much immersed in the jingle jangle guitar licks which made Liverpool legends the La’s rise to prominence in the late 80’s. Nick Mercer’s piercing vocal is reminiscent of Lee Mavers’ spine tingling delivery, whereas Scott Duncan’s guitar wizardry is very much a nod towards the striking indie-pop fret work of the Smiths’ visionary veteran Johnny Marr. First release ‘K’ok’ has already been praised by NME as ‘the most perfect pop anthem we can imagine being penned’. Sergeant are currently holed up with John Leckie - the legendary producer behind Radiohead’s ‘The Bends’, the Stone Roses’ eponymous debut and The Verve’s ‘A Storm In Heaven’ - recording their as yet untitled debut which is penned in for a September release on Mercury Records. Alan McGee has been quick to herald the band as the saviours of Scottish Music in his Guardian blog, while Emily Eavis personally asked the unsigned band to play Glastonbury in 2007, so taken aback was she by their refreshing material. In December the lads saw the New Year in with style selling out the 1500 capacity Rothes Hall in Glenrothes, still without having had a single released. Expect a flurry of live activity to be announced soon, but for the time being ‘K’OK’ and the infectious ‘Time Is Now’ should be enough to whet your appetite.
THE EQUIVALENT OF . . .
When Simon (Vox + Guitar) and Stephen (Guitar + Vox) arrived in Derby in 2004 it would only be a matter of time before the experiences, trials and tribulations of the two would combine in the fusion of genres that make The Equivalent Of... Joined by local lads Julian and Iain, the two were able to take the music from a dark front room in Gerrard Street to the stage. With friendship at the forefront of the adventure and desire to break the mould, late nights, hard work and plenty of alcohol has manifested in Upbeat tales of love, loss, destructions and violence...
YOUNG GUNS
Within the space of a year, Young Guns have already created a large loyal fanbase who follow them passionately around the Midlands singing their songs back at them. Featuring well written personal lyrics depicting real life situations in a conversational manner ala Alex Turner, while the music takes influence from some of the noughties most influential bands like Arctic Monkeys, The Courteeners and The Kooks.
THE INSIGHT
Opening will be The Insight. They all met at Derby University in first year and began hanging out playing music. In the second year they began writing songs, recorded an EP and playing gigs in and around Derby.
