Sun 17th May 20:00 IDLEWILD :: BLACK SPIDERS
Idlewild are a Scottish rock band, originally based in Edinburgh. The band is composed of Roddy Woomble (lead vocals), Rod Jones (guitar, backing vocals), Colin Newton (drums), Allan Stewart (guitar) and Gareth Russell (bass). To date, the band has released five studio albums.
Initially, the band's sound obeyed the conventions of 1990s British indie-punk guitar music, however, unlike many of their contemporaries, it developed over time, from an edgy and angular sound (as heard in their early material - once described by the NME as "the sound of a flight of stairs falling down a flight of stairs"[1]) to a sweeping, melodic rock sound as displayed on The Remote Part and Warnings/Promises. While Idlewild's sound cannot be easily placed into a specific genre, they have clearly been influenced by the likes of: Gang Of Four, Pavement, R.E.M., The Smiths and Fugazi.
Part of Idlewild's early success can be attributed to their singles gaining heavy rotation on Steve Lamacq's Evening Session on BBC Radio 1. Alongside his all-round endorsement of the band, Lamacq often cites them as one of his favourite bands. Currently, the band is in the midst of writing their sixth full-length album. With five albums under their belt, 17 singles, a live DVD and one of their albums reaching No 3 in the charts, expectations for their new material are high.

“There’s enough strength and versatility within their own self-coined ‘Dub-Hop’ sound to make it clear we’d better keep an eye on these guys” - The Guardian
"A glass and a half of solid fun-tertainment" - NME
"Big Up BOY COM. !!!" - Irration Steppas
"Yeah, they are wicked!" - Soundcrash

Ocean Thief are an up-and-coming musical collective hailing from the fetching city of Bath. Fusing the considered melodies of Radiohead and Jeff Buckley with the more monumental soundscapes of Sígur Rós, their songs remain etched firmly in the mind long after listening.
Emily Adams
You may be forgiven for thinking that Emily Jane Adams is just another female guitarist and vocalist; however it would be a grave mistake to generalise her in such a way. Bringing together an eclectic and delicious taster menu of soul, jazz, blues, rock and funk, Emily’s mezze of sounds puncture deeply into the soul of the listener. Despite her youth, Emily has a voice which eloquently conveys real pain, whilst it simultaneously has the ability to uplift. The heavy jazz influence in ‘Bring Back My Love Today’ echoes the caramel-like fluidity of Diana Krall’s ‘Peel Me a Grape’. This track would not seem out of place in either the Jazz Cafe or indeed Ibiza’s Cafe Del Mar. Emily’s voice is compelling yet light. The haunting echoes in ‘When You Walk Out That Door’ can be compared to the deep, penetrating sound of Sarah McLachlan. While ‘Johnny Boy’ has elements of the lighter, acoustic sound of K T Tunstall. With a talent that is raw and untainted by the technology so readily available in music production today, Emily Jane Adams is truly a breath of fresh air, and one certainly to be watched.
