Gig Guide: Fri 8th May

Fri 8th May 19:30 JOHNNY FOREIGNER :: TUBELORD :: MY PSYCHOANALYST :: BEYOND THIS POINT ARE MONSTERS

Waited Up ‘Til It Was Light is the debut album from Johnny Foreigner. Confirming their prolific nature, the album has as many surprises as it does their branded form of frantic, melodic, indie-rock exuberance. The band’s rigorous touring, most recently alongside Idlewild, Los Campesinos, Young Knives, Blood Red Shoes, The Subways and Forward Russia including appearances at NME Brats, SXSW, and the Great Escape swiftly cemented last single Eyes Wide Terrified as a live favourite. Fractured melody and unpredictability collide, in characteristic Johnny Foreigner fashion, before erupting in a juggernaut chorus that a 100 Broken Windows-era Idlewild would have killed for. With the Arcs Across The City mini album having been rapturously received with plaudits such as Kerrang!’s album of the week, The Fly’s single of the month and both Artrocker’s Single Of The Month and Album Of The Month, their debut full length documents the band’s continual rise in fine fashion. Sometimes a band comes along that you want to obsess over, collect all the B-Sides, search out the demos. They’re very few and far between, but, almost certainly, this is one of them.

This summer check out JoFo at one of their many festival spots including: Hurricane and Southside Festivals (Germany), Truck Festival, Zoo Festival, Lounge on the Farm, T In The Park, Summersonic (Japan), Lovebox, Latitude, Stand Calling Festival, Surfstock and Sugarhill.

They will be joined by buddies Tubelord who themselves are fast becoming an household name via the DIY route. Think Biffy-Clyro-meets-Foals-style rock.

Local support comes in the form of My Psychoanalyst and Beyond This Point Are Monsters.

Fri 8th May 20:00 TONE CLUB :: TWENTY BELOW ZERO :: THE DANDILIONS :: TASTEBUDS :: SKETCHES

Up and coming Leicester based Alternative band, Twenty Below Zero, have a unique sound with definite influences from such bands as Biffy Clyro. They have recently released their E.P. aptly named ‘Eat. Sleep And Go To It’.

Also hailing from Leicester, The Dandilions are a major force emerging from a buoyant music scene in Middle England. Four young lads, playing music beyond their years, as if their life depended on it, guaranteed to get the head bobbing and feet tapping. Last year they played Glastonbury after winning through on BBC Radio 1 Introduces Stage.

Tastebuds began in early 2008 with a group of good friends jamming together in an empty nursing home. They soon developed their own sound and started to take it seriously. Tastebuds started recording and gigging when after their very first gig they were given the chance to play Party In The Park and invited onto Mansfield 103.2fm for an interview. "Tastebuds caused a stir in the offices and every single person was whistling their tracks. They are new and fresh whilst reminding you of that catchy folk style." Chris Birksy Mansfield 103.2FM

Over the past eighteen months Sketches have been touring extensively in the UK, increasing their fanbase whilst developing commercial recognition including local and national radio support from the likes of BBC6 and XFM London. The band have played at Austria's 'Snowbombing Festival', reached the finals of a competition with the opportunity to play at both Leeds and Reading festival, and were awarded a support slot with The Datsuns at the Camden Barfly by making the top ten in the nationwide 'Red Stripe Awards'. Their debut single is produced by former Shed Seven member Fraser Smith who has produced music by many successful bands such as Winterkids and Little Man Tate.
