Gig Guide: Thu 7th May

Thu 7th May 20:00 DIE DIE DIE :: LUXURY STRANGER :: SEVEN TWENTY ONE

DIE DIE DIE!
- is a 3-piece Punk/Indie band originally from Dunedin, but are now based in Auckland. Since their formation in November 2003, they have solidified their reputation as one of New Zealand’s most popular bands. With an emphasis on rhythm and volume, Die! Die! Die! create a driving sound that is immediate and visceral, while retaining enough melody to keep their songs in your head long after their short set has come to a close. Die! Die! Die! quickly bought a van and started playing as many shows in as many towns as they could in both New Zealand and Australia, including both Homebake and Meredith festivals. The band has gotten support slots for bands such as Wire and Franz Ferdinand, Marilyn Manson and also two large-scale national tour supports already this year for the reformed Straightjacket Fits and the renamed Shihad, and numerous shows in the USA and UK.

Die! Die! Die! are about to follow their limited-availability, self-titled debut album with Promises Promises, a record that should propel them towards greater exposure. Iggy, Gang of Four, A Certain Ratio, Joy Division and Pixies are their noise-pop and dance-rock antecedents, but live especially, they come across as trailblazers rather than pasticheurs. The racket produced by a phenomenally tight rhythm section, combined with Andrew Wilson’s demotic vocals and slashed guitar, is one of the most sonically exciting dins Breaking Act has heard in months. Catch them live if you can; if you can’t, Promises Promises is a great place to start.

Luxury Stranger is the 'brain child' of Simon York. After working within a strictly guitar based rock band, achieving success signing to Roadrunner Records and playing with  top names in music including Mansun and 10CC, Simon finally left all that behind him and began solo work as a musician, artist and actor. Experimenting with electronic instruments and layering vocal textures, creating both giant and subtle soundscapes
