Gig Guide: Fri 21st Nov
Today 19.30 Goon Squad / The Maybeez / The Original Dave Band / Shoot The Poets
Goon Squad
are a four piece band from the Midlands including ex-Automatics members, Pete and Stu, who enlisted drummer Rees for company. When looking for a second guitarist, found female guitarist Red whose previous bands include Mudkicka! As well as The Automatic, Pete and Stuart’s previous bands include, Captain Black, Shilo, and Bods Packed Lunch. They’ve gigged all over, supporting The Futureheads and Limehouse Lizzy, and played scooter rallys and came out alive!
The Maybeez
They were born a couple of years ago in Derby, where they remain playing rock/punk/pop tunes. Their singing bass player sometimes thinks he's Sting, which is not cool. Their guitarist is physically incapable of smiling. They play music to stave off the lure of the Sofa and daytime TV.
Original Dave
are a four piece band from Derby, rapidly gaining a reputation around the Midlands for their unique musical style and showmanship. They formed four years ago with a mission to perform their own material to their awaiting crowds. Original Dave are influenced by many different styles and genres, never being frightened to try new ideas and directions. They perform at many different venues up and down the UK (supporting top acts such as Edison, The James Warner Prophecies and Paddy Considine's Riding the Low) and have recorded 2 E.P.'s. They have also been recently interviewed by the BBC for an article on their website.
Shoot The Poets
The Shoot the Poets story resembles Fox's Dark Glacier's, in the sense that it tastes of liquorice and aniseed. It began at the end of February 2008: Josh Wild had just been released from Guantanamo Bay and had become restless woth his mind unstable. Dan Williams, president of the USA at the time, knew he had to keep him distracted for the welfare of the welfare state, so he penned 'Operation Shoot the Poets', with the help of daredevil extraordinaire and model train maker Ryan Cummings. The plan they concocted was daring, and with Ryan's influence largely train related, they planned to start a band, with Wild taking his anger out on a kit of unsuspecting drums. Ash Howarth was roped in to sing, it was a bold move, twice convicted of kicking puppies, Howarth was possibly as unstable as Wild. The gamble was rewarding though, Wild has since calmed down, and is training to become a vicar, and Howarth has bought three puppies. Williams and Cummings are both now heroin addicts, but that is of no importance to the operation. It’s certainly been successful. The path ahead looks bountiful and gigs are always near, so come along, spread the word, don’t spread infections!

Today 20:00 Old Basford / Benno Blum / The Fakers / In Isolation
Old Basford
have succeeded in creating a deafening buzz around Nottingham and are ready to spread their wings and go big time. Having played extensively throughout the U.K. Over their three years together Old Basford’s friendship and lifestyle is now effortlessly expressed within their Heavy soulful boogie. Their sound is unobtainable to anyone lacking single minded devotion to rock and roll. Tight, insatiable rhythms somehow contain the raw energy stirred up by powerful, impassioned vocals. All is irresistibly engaging, all conspiring to set this band apart from fashionable pretenders. Old Basford have tapped into rock and rolls’ main artery and share its life blood with influences such as Queens of the Stone Age, The Black Keys and The Band. Old Basford are doing their best to return excitement and credibility to British Rock music.
Benno Blum
Benno Blum, Robin Smith and Ian Bradley, formed late Spring 2007 with the intention of making simple, raw blues music. Relying simply on electric guitar, drums and vocals, Benno Blum mix the old style blues of Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker with the drive and energy of modern blues & rock bands such as The Black Keys, Queens Of The Stone Age and Louis XIV.
The Fakers
In today’s over-hyped and fad following music scene it can be quite difficult to distinguish what matters when it comes to that oh so frivolous task of selecting a band as the next big thing. Its tough believe me, but where do you draw the line? When do you say enough is enough? How often is it that a band comes along and inspires the confidence needed to make such a bold choice and stick to it for life? The answer is not very often. Not since the days of The Stone Roses and Oasis has there been a genuine pretender to the throne.
Born out of the passion and drive to grab hold of the smouldering baton left up for grabs by so many of the greats and run with it come The Fakers. A band hell bent on not just running with it, but beating you round the head with it to make sure that they have your full attention. They don’t like to fall short of the mark, merely good isn’t good enough, tepid melodies and cheap sentiments just wont do. It has to be huge! It’s this perfectionist attitude that breads confidence in a band, and it’s this confidence that is passed on for audiences and listeners alike to use and thrive .. seeing and hearing what can only be described as one of the most exciting bands around, people know that something big is on its way and its just a matter of time.
In Isolation
In Isolation are one of many bands currently hoping to raise Nottingham's profile as an exciting city to explore and find new and original music.
