Gig Guide: Thu 24th Jul

Thu 24th Jul 19.30 The Smokestacks / Dirty Kanvus / James Capper / The Maybeez

The Smokestacks
Forged in the same Leeds melting pot of pubs and clubs that have spawned so many great bands in recent years, The Smokestacks began life as a 5 piece freak-out outfit renowned for their blues-tinged tracks and onstage improvised antics. Playing sets informed by everything from 60s and 70s psychedelia such as The Band and The Who to modern Indie greats like Elbow, The Flaming Lips and Chaka Demus And Pliers, the ‘stacks started out playing alongside such luminaries as 10,000 things and The Sunshine Underground and rapidly became stalwarts of the Leeds music scene. 2008 sees the group return as a slimmer, more handsome alt-pop four-piece armed with a fresh, lean set of short, sharp, punchy pop songs destined to charm the musical pants off even the most hardened rock curmudgeon.

“Great songs of intricacy and complexity, but instantly comprehendible and impossibly catchy.”Sandman Magazine, Leeds

Dirty Kanvus
A psychedelic acid rock jam band from Nottigham. They create a fascinating musical landscape that borrows from The Doors, steals from White Stripes and makes up the rest out of fiery rock riffs, spaced out jams and twisted poetry. The band are building a strong local buzz in Nottingham and have been featured on BBC Nottingham. Dirty Kanvus' recent EP titled “Lets Make Our Getaway” was produced by The Animal Farm.

James Capper
Within the space of a year, James Capper has already created a large loyal fanbase who follow him passionately around the Midlands singing his songs back at him. Featuring well written personal lyrics depicting real life situations in a conversational manner ala Alex Turner, while the music takes influence from some of the noughties most influential bands like Arctic Monkeys, The Courteeners and The Kooks.

"The sky is the limit for this solo performer" The Derby Evening Telegraph

The Maybeez
They were born a couple of years ago in Derby, where they remain. They play rock/punk/pop tunes. Their singing bass player sometimes thinks he's Sting, which is not cool. Their guitarist is physically incapable of smiling. They play music to stave off the lure of the Sofa and daytime TV.
