Sun 11th May 20:00 Spartacus Live - Nick Williams / Lookout Joe / Cascavel / Justin Saltmeris
Nick Williams is a distinctive singer songwriter whose comparisons include Joni Mitchell, Damien Rice, Jeff Buckley and Tori Amos.
After a short break from performing to record his latest album nick is hitting the road with the beach by the harbour national tour this summer. "Needing a break from life, nick started writing lyrics which weaved elaborate stories. He prefers not to preach about certain subjects, so instead opts for a narrative approach. Broadly speaking Nick's music has an ambient feel to it, which is appropriate considering his nostalgic lyrics. His style is heavily supported by his talented piano playing." Lookout Joe are three classically trained, 23 year old graduates, who produce piano-led pop/rock that is both instantly accessible yet has enough depth for repeated listening. The band’s influences vary significantly but range from all time greats like David Bowie, The Beatles and The Specials to contemporary artists such as Coldplay and Ben Folds. The simple line-up of just piano, bass, drums and three vocals demands refined song writing and careful instrumentation, as well as a high level of musical proficiency from the boys. Ultimately, it creates a sound that is unapologetically reminiscent yet refreshingly distinct.
Cascavel represent the new and upcoming style of music known as 'Rip Jazz'. They feature rich harmonic vocals from three female vocalists, a jazz pianist, electronic beats and basslines and a guitarist with alot of flavour.
Justin Saltmeris was the winner of the Musicians' Benevolent Fund National Songwriting Award. Armed with no more than an acoustic guitar, Justin triumphed over well-established bands to be named by the panel of distinguished industry professionals including Guy Chambers, Nik Kershaw, Cathy Dennis and Dan Gillespie Sells as 'the clear winner'.
